Winter Is Coming: 3 Steps To Prepare Your RV For Storage

Posted on

Summer is coming to a close. It's time to prepare your RV for storage. If you want to make sure that your RV is ready to use when the weather warms up again, you need to make sure that's stored properly. Proper storage techniques include more than just draining the water from the tanks – which does ensure that your pipes don't freeze during the winter. To make sure your RV is ready to go in the spring, here are three steps you'll need to take to keep it safe during winter storage.

Seal Off Access to Rodents

Rodents such as mice, rats and squirrels are going to look for a warm place to sleep when the weather turns cold. If your RV has readily-available access points, rodents are going to find their way in. You can seal off those access points by using foam insulation or steel wool.

Begin by looking under your RV. You're going to be looking for spaces where you can see through to the interior of your RV. Fill those spaces with either a small amount spray foam insulation or steel wool. This will prevent rodents from crawling into your RV.

Next, take a look inside. Clean all of your drawers and cabinets to remove any crumbs that could attract rodents. Once you've removed all the crumbs, place a scented dryer sheet in each drawer and cabinet. The scent will help keep the rodents away.

Winterize the Interior

Cold weather can wreak havoc on the interior of your RV. To protect it from damage, you should do some winterizing before placing your RV in storage for the winter. Begin by cleaning the refrigerator and defrosting the freezer. Wipe both compartments out to remove any residual moisture. Leave the doors open to prevent mold growth. Close all of the window blinds to prevent sun damage. Finally, go through and shut all of the overhead vents. This will prevent water from leaking inside during rainstorms.

Cover the Tires

If your RV is going to be stored outdoors, you'll need to winterize the tires. Give them a thorough washing and then apply a generous amount of tire dressing. Place covers over each of the tires to prevent sun exposure. Be sure to check the pressure and add air if needed.

With winter around the corner, it's time to get your RV prepared for storage. For more information, visit http://www.movewithunited.com or a similar website.
